How To Upholster

How To Upholster

Question
I am just getting to upholstery work, but is it not easier for the novice to use webbing and springs for
the seating? Not everyone has the tools readily available to cut plywood.

Answer
It all depends on your frame limitations. For the chair in the lesson, webbing would not be possible. To staple webbing into a frame, the wood frame needs to be an ample width and it should be in good condition. Half an inch is too narrow, one inch is ideal. If you find it difficult to pull the webbing tight , the job will be easier with a webbing stretcher. To staple webbing , anchor one end—then pull tight at the other end and staple across the webbing. At both ends you will fold the webbing back on itself and staple across the width of the webbing again. When you have stapled across the width of the webbing twice, you can go ahead and trim the excess webbing. Because the webbing gets folded back on itself it does create some bulk. Depending on how your chair was originally constructed you may or may not be able to substitute a plywood base for webbing and vice versa. If you have reservations about cutting wood, or do you do not need to own a jigsaw, there are many small shops that would cut your template for a small fee.

Let me know if you have more questions!
Cheers!

Reader Question From Jean,

Hi Sophia! I am reading your book “DIY Tailored Slipcovers” while I am constructing 2 wingchair slips. I had been pin-fitting them on the chair w/ the reverse side of the fabric up, but want to experiment cutting each peice to measurement then serging, as you suggest. Your book has been a BIG help!!

Could you help me??

1.) What is the best way to join seams w/ 3 or more pieces, angles?

2.) Also, do you do pintucks around the curves to take up slight excess fabric + which direction should the tucks go, up or down?

Wingback Chair Slipcover, Chapter Six. From my book, DIY Tailored Slipcovers

Wingback Chair Slipcover, Chapter Six. From my book, DIY Tailored Slipcovers

Answer

Hi Jean,

I will be happy to answer your questions.

1. Always create the complete arm assembly and the complete inside back assembly before you join the two to each other. The entire arm should be assembled—IA (inside arm), OA (outside arm) and AF (arm front) before it attaches to the finished body assembly. The body consists of the IB (inside back) and OB. (outside back)

If you take a close look at pages 44 and 46 you can see the direction of the pleats. I have attached a larger pic to enlarge that detail.

As for assembling the pieces so that the slipcover lays flat the answer lies on pages 56 and 57!

Best Regards,

sophia

This catalogue has been shipped to Kevin M. East of Saskatchewan!
This catalog is a 1971 reproduction of the original Eaton’s Spring and Summer 1927 catalog.
A historical treat, great for history buffs and fashion followers alike, it is filled with 412 pages of fashion, furniture, kitchen wares, farming equipment and more.
The Eaton legacy was founded by Timothy Eaton in Toronto in 1869 but it sadly came to end in the 90’s.
Post a comment here if you would like to be the lucky recipient of this entertaining, educational document. Ships anywhere in NA via fedex ground. Only pay shipping.
**When visiting Montreal be sure to stop and admire the old Eatons department store building on Ste. Catherine, it is a beautiful example of Art Deco architecture.
I had the pleasure of dining in the Eaton’s 9th floor cafe with its breathtaking decor and original hardwood floor intact.

Kravet -Gimp Trim #TA5189 color 616 . Available in 43 colorways, approx. $33 US yard.

The gimp trim shown above is one of many finishing options used to trim furniture with exposed wood.
To affix upholstery trim apply small amounts of hot glue to the fabric and quickly press the trim into position. Work slowly and carefully as too much glue will spread and stain your fabric.
For optimum adhesion and performance use a high temp. glue gun and heavy duty glue sticks instead of a mini glue gun. Traditional liquid latex glues are also available but due to their composition and instability I have experienced mixed reliability resulting in early repair work.
Search Kravet For Inspiration.

You can also make your own piping cord and trim your upholstered piece in any fabric you wish. Because this trim will be affixed and washing is not a concern you can use either paper or cotton cord. The standard cord size for furniture is 5/32″ or 0.4 cm. It is important to use a good quality cord with a smooth, consistent diameter as it will affect the finished appearance of your piece.

To make piping cord, cut a strip of fabric 1 1/2″ wide to the required length. Wrap your fabric strip around the cord and sew tightly either with a piping foot or zipper foot.
Once your piping cord has been assembled, cut the SA (seam allowance) as close to the stitch line as is possible. If you are using a fabric that frays quickly adjust your cut accordingly. To glue along the frame, position the cut side at a 45 degree angle against the frame.
To use this finishing method your frame must recess to accommodate the cord. See the project “chair 1″ in the magazine for more details and photos.
Fabric covered piping cord, gimp, ribbon or nailhead trim are just some of the finishing options for decorative wood trim furniture.
The chair shown to the left is finished in nailhead trim.

The crowd (especially photographers) swooned over this Lincoln. This car is stylish, modern and classy.

The total package at VW was delivered crisp and clean.

The Toyota Scion. The summer season summed up.

Beautiful details, even on the trunk of the Toyota Prius.

Toyota Venza. The style lines on the Venza are nicely balanced and sharp. Plenty of admirers at the show.

Toyota Venza. The most interesting new color at the show.

This GM model was jaw dropping for all of the wrong reasons. The arrows point to all of its’ “blue light” features. I’m only half joking when I say that I expect it serves double duty as a slot machine.

Show Notes

Ford: The only vendor to take care of the kids with video games and other interactive games.

Ford: Flex. I’m surprised by how many people really dislike the Flex. The first time I saw this car on the road I was intrigued but impartial. In no time I grew to appreciate it’s originality and now I think it’s almost perfect, except for a small style change at the back end near the roof .

Dodge Caliber: It’s a cute cute little car, but saddle it up next to another hatchback like the Venza and the crucial chord that separates the two is thoughtful, laborious design.
Distinction adds value in the form of appreciation for years to come. Take note in the Prelude or the Mustang.
I suspect the Nissan Cube will get the ball rolling in the “think outside of the box” compact car category.

Chrysler and GM I’ve never been known to drool over a car like I do with textiles and colors. I walked through the halls and stopped only when my interest peaked. Nothing stopped me here. It was all business as usual.
Everyone of the presenters was so polished and professional so the one guy presenting at Chrysler in jeans was easily observed. Not that jeans can’t be formal, but this guy was noticeably dressed down in a lethargic kind of way. I couldn’t help but compare…….

This set of chairs belongs to Julie K.W. of Amherstburg, Ontario. The fabric she chose has a very modern look and feel, including the contrast fabric for the back of the chair. To maintain this contemporary transition we chose to eliminate the traditional gimp which is usually applied under the nail trim and covers the cut raw edge of fabric. A number of other changes were introduced and some of the lessons discussed in this project include new foam build up, nailhead trim, relief cuts and more.

Foldschool is a cardboard furniture concept designed by Swiss-based architect Nicola Enrico Stäubli. This project was designed to be hand-crafted by the consumer, for kids.
Project patterns and instructions are available on his site, www.foldschool.com

For the first time, kids can be encouraged to color their furniture!

My wordpress blog, did indeed crash. I am working hard to get things running again.
In the meantime, my articles are still posted and can be read at diyonlinemag.com
Unfortunately, I had to delete my old widgetbox account and start over with the blog.
That was yesterday, I hope today is a better day!
